Two totals are comparable only when they describe the same investigation, remedy, testing and restoration. Use the worksheet to reveal missing scope and compare supplied figures; it does not estimate a Sacramento price.

How a repair quote fits together
- InvestigationFind the cause and define access.
- RepairSpecify the remedy, parts and testing.
- RestorationIdentify drying and finish work separately.
Start with the same problem description
Give each business the same address, observed symptom and previous findings. Ask whether the quoted figure includes the visit and investigation or assumes a diagnosis. Keep tentative estimates separate from written proposals.
Identify what is excluded
Compare access openings, parts, labor, testing, disposal, required permits and surface restoration. If one proposal excludes a component, obtain its actual price before adding it. The worksheet shows uncertainty rather than inventing missing prices.
Verify the contracting business
Check the business and applicable license through CSLB, compare the name with the proposal, and clarify insurance and permit responsibilities. CSLB’s homeowner checklist also asks about written start/end expectations, scope and changes. This is general preparation, not legal advice.
Authorize changes deliberately
An inspection can reveal another defect. Ask how the contractor will explain and price additional work before continuing. Preserve the revised scope and written authorization; a low first figure is not automatically the least expensive completed job.
Compare two supplied quotes
Enter each written total and any known excluded work to the nearest cent. Use zero only when the business confirms no additional charge. Unknown exclusions prevent a fair total comparison.
